April 3rd, Family BBQ

When I was a kid, our family would get together on the weekends and BBQ. The adults would drink, argue, and cook and the kids would run amok through the desert. We were at grandma's house or up in the monument. I've missed that since I've been gone, since the family has been gone. The good news is that we're slowly gravitating toward each other. I came back, my aunt came back, and now cousins are coming back. All I've wanted is for my kids to have what I had growing up, a huge close-knit clan of aunts, uncles, and cousins who would be there for them, providing support, love, and help.

Merry Christmas to Us!

I hate it when you think you haven't really bought much for the kids so at the last minute you run out and buy a bunch more stuff and then in the morning they end up with WAY too many toys. Next year I'm keeping a list... and checking it twice!

Ian and Auntie Lorina
Lorina now holds favorite aunt status for Ian since she sat and played video games with him. Lorina pretty much rocks.
I'll be so glad when she and PJ decide to move back here so they can hang out with us :)
Hint, hint.

More Cousins!
This is my cousin Kyle's adorable daughter Kailyn. I apologize if I spelled it wrong :)

You can't tell they're all related, huh?

Surprise!
When my mom graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Sociology this May from Chico State, we all said "It's about time!".

Actually, we were so proud of her that we planned a small wine and cheese surprise party to celebrate the occasion. We even kept my sister Suzie's arrival from Maine a secret, which is no small feat considering how nosy our mother is :)

We had the hardest time finding something for Mom to do while we picked Suzie up from the airport in Palm Springs Saturday night. Mom is literally at our house EVERY night, not that we'd have it any other way, but it makes it hard to plan surprises! Our good friends Jessica and Shelly talked her into going to dinner, a play, and then out for drinks for the evening. The bad news was that I had left my Facebook inbox open and when she used my computer she saw an email from someone saying they regretabbly couldn't make it to the party. Oops! The good news was that she expected the party to be Saturday night, and had NO idea that Suzie would be here. Luckily it still ended up being a surprise.

So not only did we have trouble getting her out of our house Saturday night, we had trouble getting her TO our house Sunday afternoon! I finally had to lie to her and tell her there was a big sale going on and we had to get to the store soon. She's a sucker for a sale!

Judging by the 9 empty bottles of wine we cleaned up afterward, everyone had a good time :)

And for all the Kelly critics out there, she did not drink the wine but she did eat the amazing Trader Joe's cheese! Congrats again mom! We're proud of you. Now what are you going to DO with that degree?

He's Here!
Introducing the newest member of our clan, our nephew ... Colin Patrick McGrorty!
He weighed in at a whopping 9lbs 3oz and was 20 inches long. A BIG boy!

I'm not sure how she's smiling since she did it all without drugs.
I don't even like to go to work drug-free!

Central Beach Coronado Saturday

Jessica said that you know you have a rough life when you have to choose between going to see a Jimmy Buffett concert in Las Vegas or going to the beach. I'd have to agree! When she put it that way, I had to thank the universe for our jobs and geographical location and how they enable us to do the things we want to do.

There is seriously nothing better than being at the beach and watching your kids run around and have a great time! The beach is such a fascinating place of discovery for them. The little orange fuzzy thing in the slideshow coming up is a sea anenome that washed up on shore attached to a rock. Ian was so excited!

You'll also notice that Shawn is in the water. A few years ago you could barely get him in a swimming pool, and now here he is out boogie boarding in the Pacific Ocean. Who knew?

If I ever win the lottery, I'm moving to Coronado Island. It's just about our favorite place on Earth. If you need to get ahold of us, we'll be there every other weekend this summer and possibly some weekdays too :)

Facebook and Blog Update

Facebook has made me a REALLY bad blogger! Sorry to you all who don't use it :) And if you don't use it, you should, because it's fun! Anyway, last weekend we went whale watching in Dana Point, CA. We ended up following three grey whales up the coast. It was amazing! Luckily we had stopped by Target just before we got there and picked up the Nikon zoom lens for my camera.

We ended up going to WalMart that evening and purchasing everything we needed to make a bonfire on the beach and make smores. It was a little too chilly for the kids so we didn't stay long. But we did have a great time. I've never been so frightened by flaming, flying marshmallows in my whole life. A 2 year old with a skewer is a bad, bad idea. We stayed the night at a hotel and left early (well, early for us!) the next morning to head over to Pomona, which was about an hour's drive from the beach. We went to the LA County Irish Music Festival, which was also a blast. However, the best (and most embarrassing) part was when Ian spotted two midgets (is that politically correct? Little people?) He asked "Are those leprechauns?"

Last Night in Delaware

Here are a few shots of our last night in Delaware. One thing I really loved about being there is that there are pubs and taverns EVERYWHERE! Wanna go somewhere? Let's go to the pub! There's nothing I enjoy more than sharing conversation and a good beer in a relaxed atmosphere. The food was good too :) Another thing I really get a kick out of is seeing my childless siblings interact with my kids. They're both going to be great parents someday!

THE Wedding!

I don't even know what to say about the wedding itself. It was beautiful of course, but so much more than that since all of the touches were so personal. To start it off, Shawn's (the groom) best friend played the guitar as Suzie walked down the aisle. She was escorted by both my dad AND my mom. The vows were non-traditional and somehow fit with the bride and groom's medical background. I was moved to tears when friends of Suzie and Shawn performed a song that they had written for the wedding. It was amazing! I wish I had a video of it! Kelly and I did all of the flowers, decorating, and centerpieces for the ceremony and reception. Anyway, here are a few pictures before I talk about the food and the reception :)

The food... did I mention the food? Holy cow! It was fantastic. Suzie chose the appetizers, which consisted of all sorts of goodies (including figs!) wrapped in bacon. There was fruit, grilled vegetables, hummus, an assortment of cheeses (including blueberry!), crackers, and baba ghanoush. The salad was unexpectedly amazing :) It was green topped with pears, bleu cheese, and  candied pecans. Dinner was set up at different stations that consisted of prime rib, crab cakes and sauce, and a mashed potato bar where three types of mashed potatoes were served  in martini glasses. And as if that wasn't cool enough, you had the choice of every potato topping imaginable, all the way down to fried leeks. Dessert was just as good, the bride picked out her very favorite ice cream from a local dairy. The chocolate shots and gourmet coffee bar were also too good to pass up. Now why didn't I think of putting liqueur in chocolate shot glasses? Genius! After sampling all of that I was too full for cake, but managed to sneak in a bite of each flavor. They were all delectable, of course.

The children had a fantastic time mingling with the guests and dancing until they passed out. Everyone was so nice to them and since they were the only children there they became the center of attention on the dance floor. The DJ was even kind enough to play Ian's favorite song, Abba's Dancing Queen! Ian thinks we should go to a wedding every weekend! I disagree, I'm wedding-ed out for awhile :)

The most amazing (have I used that word a time or two?) part of the evening wasn't even wedding-related. The groom, Shawn, has a 27 year old sister with a congenital heart defect. Stephanie has gone through multiple open-heart surgeries as well as a heart transplant at the ripe old age of 15. She had been in the hospital for several weeks up to the wedding and her health was deteriorating rapidly. The week we were there, she was placed at the top of the transplant list. They expected to get a heart for her on New Year's Eve, but that didn't work out. The day of the wedding, Stephanie's doctors flew out of state to check on a donated heart. About halfway through the reception, it was announced that the heart was good and she underwent heart transplant surgery that same night. Gives you goose bumps, right? So when you wonder about the pictures with the laptop computer, now you know. That's Stephanie, the fourth bridesmaid, watching her brother's wedding via Skype and a webcam, from her hospital room. I'm sure she and her family would appreciate any prayers, positive energy, good vibes, well wishes, or whatever else you have to send her way!

Here are the pictures from my mom's camera, captions courtesy of "Bunny" :)  Sorry for any repeats! One thing I forgot to mention was the Matron of Honor's (Suzie's BF from 4th grade, Amanda Powers) speech. She talked about the pact they made in the 4th grade, where not even a brontosaurus could break their friendship. She then went on to talk about ticks and fleas and Suzie's dog, Angus. It was hysterical! You really had to be there, but if I ever come across a video I'll be sure to post it. Enjoy the gratuitous second slide show!

JTNP

We went hiking Sunday in the Joshua Tree National Park. Ian said that he liked it more than Disneyland! I don't agree :) I LOVE Disneyland! It is, however, good for the kids to get out and experience the desert landscape and the endangered creatures around them. We didn't see many creatures, but we sure looked for them!

More Pictures!

...courtesy of our good friends, the Ricards family.  I hadn't seen their kids since they were little (12 maybe?) and now they're both high school teachers. They're also cute and witty :) It was really nice to talk to them and hang out even though our plans to drink beer after the reception back at the hotel were cut short due to their passing out before we got there. Maybe next time!

My "Little" Brother's Wedding Weekend

The wedding in Phoenix was BEAUTIFUL and we had such a great time! It felt so good to have all four of us back together.  Four? I guess now it's more like 9 :) I can't wait to do it again in January! I think our travels are winding down, we need a while to relax. We're contemplating another short Oak Glen trip next weekend for pumpkin picking and then we're grounded for awhile. I'm thinking it will feel nice to sleep in once or twice and just hang out around the house for a change. Anyway, enjoy the wedding pictures! We're SO happy to have Lorina as our new sister and we wish them all the best, no matter how hokey that sounds.

This is the Life

Last night I was in the office surfing the internet when I realized that my sister was cooking dinner, my mom was washing the dishes, my dad was reading the kids a story, and Shawn was playing a video game. I was all alone with nothing in particular to do. It was the greatest feeling. I realized that this is the way it's supposed to be!
